The LINE lamp
The LINE lamp specially made for BEYOND COUTURE exhibition to create a textile cloud to give a feeling of privacy in the fair hall was a great success during last week Stockholm furniture fair.
A lot of people asked us about it and we are now searching for a producer to be able to develop this project this year.

“BEYOND COUTURE”

20 designers at Biologiska was one of the most hailed exhibitions during last year’s edition of Stockholm Design Week. Design verging on art where shown in the midst of stuffed animals and scenographed nature in Stockholm’s most original museum.
We started Studio Färg and Blanche after this feat of successful organisation.
This year we are literally invading the fair! Beyond Couture is our response to an invitation by the Stockholm Furniture Fair to create a textile exhibition/bar. We have created our own fake nature filled it up with dressed-up animals and kilt tribes!
Most of the objects have been specially created by hand in our studio for the exhibition: some 35 seats, 10 tables, 25 lamps, and much more

ROCK CHAIR & BON-BON SEAT

Being rocked as a means of relaxation or comfort is a timeless, basic human experience. Though at some time in the early 20th century the design develop- ment of the rocking chair stopped. Rocking chairs frequently remain in an ornate, salon mode. Fredrik Färg’s Rock Chair is a rocking chair for our own time. It continues the traditional rocking chair’s comforting function but in a modern design.
“I developed the prototype during an exchange term in Australia where I was given an assignment to created a chair using only MDF board and a jig saw. It was a challenge to produce something personal and coherent using the simplest means.”
Rock Chair is a knock-down design sold in a flat pack. The five pieces are easy to fit together. When the chair has been assembled, the construction is its expressive feature. Nothing is hidden and one can see how the chair holds together. There is a toy-like charm to its simplicity. As a model, Rock Chair is like a drawing that one can sit on, as beautiful as it is cleverly functional.
Rocking chairs encourage one to sit for a long time. While working on the Rock Chair Fredrik also had the idea of producing soft cushions for it. The round cushions are a graphically elegant addition to the generous forms of the rocking chair and make it comfortable. Rock Seat comes in two variants, one
in leather and one in cotton canvas. The idea is that the cushions should last for a long time and gain a more beautiful patina with the passing of the years.

Beyond Couture
- fantasifulla former i textilt barlandskap
I baren och utställningen Beyond Couture tar Fredrik Färg, benäget assisterad av studiopartnern Emma Marga Blanche, med oss på en otyglad resa bortom det normativa. En textilupplevelse inspirerad av modevärldens sätt att visa upp sina extravaganta kollektioner med stora modevisningar i magnifika miljöer.
– Utställningen står för en skapande styrka där utmaningen har varit att lyfta fram textilierna i objekten. Vi vill förflytta tanken längre bort och visa vad som är möjligt att åstadkomma.
När vi möts i deras rätt osannolika studio, ett litet parkeringsgarage där möbel- och lampmodeller får dela utrymme med hyresvärdens uppställda bilar, är förberedelserna inför mässan i full gång. Fredrik, den metodiske finsnickaren från Bohuslän, och franskfödda Emma, som man bara måste tro när hon talar om att hon får ungefär tusen idéer om dagen, tycks komplettera varandra perfekt. Medan vi kliver runt i lokalerna och ömsom duckar för gigantiska tyglampor (”som ska föreställa stormande moln”) ömsom provsitter pallar i glänsande textilier som möjligen föreställer förstorade insekter (”fast just de kommer nog inte att ställas ut på mässan”) försöker de bägge formgivarna förklara hur de jobbar. Det utmynnar i en härlig kompott av intuitiv inspiration där man inte alltid från början vet var det kommer att sluta; det handlar om emotionella signaler som går rakt ut i handen. Samtidigt en noggrann process som retroaktivt går att redogöra för in i minsta detalj.
Utefter en vägg står ett vadderat skåp som leder våra associationer till en gigantisk boxhandske.
- När jag ställde ut ett liknande på ett galleri i New York förra året var det en besökare, en stor kraftig amerikan, som sa att han för första gången fått känslan av att vilja krama ett skåp, skrattar Fredrik. Mitt i garaget står ett annat föremål man skulle vilja krama: antagligen är det en giraff. Det är förstås meningen att man ska bli lite omtumlad, att det ska vara en upplevelse ”beyond couture”.
- Det finns en mycket större öppenhet för nya gränsöverskridningar, reflekterar både Fredrik Färg och Emma Marga Blanche apropå mixningen med modebranschen. För oss designers innebär det att vi kommer närmare en större publik. Samtidigt finns det delade känslor till att framhäva designern som person.
Fast inför Stockholm Furniture & Light råder inga delade känslor:
– En livfull vecka där man möter människor som betyder något för en. Det är som en enda lång födelsedag och nu längtar vi dit hela tiden, lyder avskedsorden från duon som skulle kunna beskrivas som designvärldens svar på modebranschens egen rebell Hussein Chalayan. I februari får vi väl höra vad de tycker om den jämförelsen….
